Acne scars - formation and treatment options

Acne often leads to the formation of scars. Acne scars are characterized by uneven and reddish discoloration on acne-affected skin. These scars are caused by the self-squeezing of pimples and blemishes, especially those that are not yet fully developed. This damages the outer and underlying layers of the skin. This causes damage to the collagen in our skin. Collagen is a protein responsible for the elasticity of skin and connective tissue. Due to the lack of collagen, the skin is unable to restore its previous condition, resulting in the formation of scar tissue.

Different types of acne scars

When it comes to acne scars, a distinction must be made between atrophic scars, hypertrophic scars and keloids, the latter of which only very rarely occurs as a result of acne.

Atrophic scars

Atrophic scars are characterized by their sinking into the skin, which is caused by insufficient scarring of the body.

Hypertrophic scars

Hypertrophic scars cause a bulge on the skin caused by excess scarring of the body.

The formation of scars results in reduced moisture regulation and reduced blood circulation in the affected areas of skin. In addition, a significant reduction in skin elasticity is observed due to the lower collagen content.

treatment options

Complete healing of acne scars is not possible, but there are several treatment options available to alleviate them. The focus is on stimulating skin regeneration or cell renewal, and thus the formation of new collagen.

Active ingredient care

Allantoin : Allantoin is a plant-based active ingredient that reduces the visibility of scars and also prevents the formation of excessively severe hypertrophic scars and keloids. High concentrations of allantoin are found particularly in horse chestnut, wheat germ, and comfrey, as well as in our serum base.

Rosehip oil: As another herbal active ingredient, rosehip oil accelerates skin renewal and collagen production. It also increases the skin's moisture absorption. We offer the option of incorporating rosehip oil as an active ingredient into your customized DMS cream.

Retinol: Retinol improves the skin's resistance to external environmental influences. It also stimulates skin regeneration and the body's own collagen production. Retinol can also be included in your customized DMS cream and serum at Herbsom.

Chemical peels

Chemical peels, such as our BHA & Azelaic Acid Peel, penetrate the skin to break down sebum buildup and eliminate bacteria. They also stimulate circulation and thus the cell regeneration process.

CO2 laser

Small laser beams hit the skin, penetrate it, and cause minimal injury. These are intended to activate the skin's regeneration process by stimulating the formation of new cells and collagen production. In this case, it is essential to consult a dermatologist for professional advice, especially regarding the risks.

microneedling

Small, fine needles are inserted into the skin, causing injury to the upper layer of skin.

As with the CO2 laser, the goal is to stimulate cell regeneration and collagen production. A thorough consultation with a dermatologist is an essential part of this treatment.
